Instructions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan.

In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs, one at a time. In a separate bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Add the dry ingredients to the creamed mixture alternately with the buttermilk, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Beat in the sour cream and almond extract.

Stir in the almonds, walnuts, raisins, and candied fruit, if desired. Pour batter into prepared pan. Bake in preheated oven for 35 to 40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean. Cool in pan for 10 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack to cool completely.
